Two things, and they are opposites. The Northern Explorer Loop is 25km on exposed paths with very little shade, and people ride it on bikes that have never been serviced. Distance and heat are what finally break a stretched chain, dry hubs and hard old tyres.
The other is the Rail Corridor. Grass and gravel cuts tyres, packs grit into the chain and cassette, and puts dust into hubs and headsets where it quietly ruins bearings.
